Australia, Round 2

After the winter that we've experienced here in Ontario, who wouldn't want to pack up and move to a warmer country for a year, away from the frigid temperatures, slush-covered streets and paralyzing ice-storms? My decision has been made for some time now and the day of departure is closing in quickly. Australia is the winning country that gets to put up with yet another Canadian looking to escape the cold. Here's a list of what I'm looking forward to during my year in Oz.

1. Bye bye snow.

Well, I have to start with the obvious! So "winter" does actually exist in Australia. Winter in Oz runs from June 1st to the end of August. The average low temperature in Sydney during the winter months is about 10 degrees Celsius. (No problem!) Summer in Sydney is quite pleasant with average highs in the mid-twenties. Cities like Perth and Darwin can get well into the 30's during the hottest months of the year. Can't wait!

 2. Endless beaches.

Regardless of whether you are a beach bum or not, you won't be able to help but be awed by Australia's sandy coastline. From the world-famous Bondi beach in Sydney to the infinite deserted pieces of paradise sprinkled around the country, there is bound to be a beach that may just turn you into a beach bum.

3. Surf's up!

It all began with a one-week trip to North Carolina in 2009 with one of my best buds. Spending that week at the Wrightsville Beach surf camp got me more than hooked on the sport. I am fortunate enough to say that I have since stood on waves in Portugal, Hawaii and Australia. Like they say, practice makes perfect and I plan to put this theory to the ultimate test in Oz.

  4. Sydney, Melbourne, Perth...

World-class cities to explore without the exuberant flight prices that we are used to in Canada? Where do I click?

5. New Zealand.

Apologies to my Aussie friends but your country's proximity to New Zealand has definitely got me excited. Can't wait to be mesmerized by the natural beauty of your nearby neighbour.

What do you love about Australia?
